IMAGINE - Executive Summary

An Information Technology Centre, several multipurpose, multimedia workshops, halls and laboratories of varying capacities and architecture. Local and Wide Area voice and data Networks, Computers, Stress free Wireless Internet Access, Training and Re-Training, First Class Maintenance Service, Enterprise Software, web based cost recovery and funds collection technics: All these sum up to a big ICT picture.

There is the need to digitize the curriculum, creating units to acquire, evaluate, and disseminate multimedia and Web-based educational materials, for finding good topical material and demonstrating its use to staff and students. We are aware of the many dimensions to introducing digital tools into the classroom: rooms must be fitted for multimedia presentations; instructors require to be trained; curricula need to be structured; students need to be sensitised, 24/7 alternative/renewable power source, redundancies etc, etc. 

None-the-less our Institutions should change the way instructions are delivered to students. Distance education, problem-based learning, computer-based training, and two-way, full-motion, real-time (live) interaction between the student and instructor should all be employed at Our Institutions. There should be a dramatic shift in the way the university delivers degrees. A pedagogical revolution should be started by our Institutions, and SXCL may be able to assist to move forward in this enterprise and possibly blaze the trail for other Nigerian Universities and Polytechnics to emulate.

Imagine every staff and student with a distinctly university email account! That alone translates to millions of virtual documents available within the university! Cheap and fast Internet access for everyone on campus! Several Hundred PCs for students’ use! A computer each for 100% of the academic staff and at least a third of the support staff! A number of courses having their materials available on the campus server! Hundreds of students a year taking distance education courses from our Institutions, thus contributing to national reconstruction by providing economically feasible educational opportunities to people in disparate geographic regions.

A new strategy for teaching students by mixing asynchronous learning, hands-on practical experience, and the mastery of an abundance of Information resources can be deployed!
