The Faculty
OBJECTIVE AND PHILOSOPHY OF THE FACULTY
At the undergraduate level, the faculty aims at providing University education in Law, primarily. Nigerian Law, but it is the belief of the faculty that law cannot be meaningfully taught in isolation of disciplines in the Humanities Arts and social sciences as well as management sciences, which are designed to give them sound foundation in Humanities. Also in-line with general university requirements, and in order to imbibe awareness of existing norms, Law students are expected to take two courses namely:

1. Rural Life and Agriculture;
2. and Nigerian Life and Culture

The first set of Law Undergraduates commenced their studies in the Faculty in the 1983/84 session.

 
CURRICULUM

At the Undergraduate level, the curriculum of studies in the Faculty is designed to produce law graduates who will contribute meaningfully to societal development and meet the expectations of the society. The Faculty teaches law with adaptation to social, political and economic changes in the society and inculcates in student, the need to understand law in the context of its functioning in society.

The Faculty aims at satisfying the yearnings of various categories of students who include prospective Practitioners, Administrators in public and private sectors of the economy and international agencies.


However, it is acknowledge that the whole of legal knowledge cannot be imparted to students while in the Faculty. In respect therefore, student are expected to build upon the diverse knowledge acquired at the Faculty after their graduation.

It is also the policy of the Faculty to encourage legal research. This is because it constitutes valuable assets in any Lawyer’s resource. The Undergraduate Law Programme, therefore requires students in their final year to submit well-researched and carefully supervised Long Essays on any Law topic of interest.

The Law Faculty is cognizant of the special counseling needs of Law student regarding academic, social and personal problems. The latter is particularly significant in view of the peculiar nature of Olabisi Onabanjo University. The Faculty has, therefore, fashioned a Tutoring/Counselling Scheme, which complements the Guidance and Counselling Unit of the University.

In addition to the pursuit of academic excellence, students are also encouraged, through a strong Law Society to participate in practical experiments like in Law Debates, Moot Courts and Seminars. In this respect, the Faculty is aided to qualified and experienced Lawyers resident within and around the location of the Faculty.


The Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) Degree is a five-year programme, for candidates admitted through the SSCE or GCE Ordinary level and a four-year programme for students admitted through Direct Entry.

 
LOCATION

The Faculty of Law is located in the “Law Building” which is located on the Mini
Campus of the University. Efforts have been made to attain adequate office facilities for
the staff as well as Lecture, Tutorial and Moot Court Rooms. The Faculty and the University are however, making efforts to develop the Faculty permanent site in order to have a befitting Faculty of Law Building.

 
LIBRARY

There exists a physically autonomous Law situated on the Mini Campus of the University, which is withing few metres away from the Law Building. There also exists a Faculty Staff Library, which is situated within the Law Building.

the stock of books at Law Library is growing very fast. it has presently, about 10,000 volumes of primary and secondary source materials. Consignments are still expected from Local and Overseas booksellers and gifts of books are being received from within Nigeria. Some leading booksellers Judges and Legal Practitioners have made significant donations to both the Law Library and the Faculty Staff Library. The Faculty of Law Advisory Council has been instrumental in producing additional books and working developing physical facilities.

 
TEACHING ARRANGEMENTS

Course leading to the award of the LL.B Degree are designed for full time students and teaching takes the form of lectures and tutorials, three one-hour lectures, and one-hour tutorial session a week per course. Tutorials are arranged on small-group basis.

 
PRACTICAL PROGRAMME

The use of simulated excercise such as "moot court" and "court attendance" is being developed as a vehicle for Practical learning and skills development.
The law Students' Association organizes the moot court programme under the supervision of members of staff. Court attendance is occassionally arranged by the Faculty. These activities are non-examinable but compulsory for all Law Students. Efforts are being made to develop appropriate facilities for the Moot Court Excercise.

 
OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY LAW STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION("OOULSA")

This association caters for the social needs of the Law students in the Faculty.
Its membership is therefore compulsory for all Law students in the Faculty.
The Association is managed by an Executive Committe, which is elected into office each year.
Further details regarding the activities and organization can be obtained from the President of the Association.

 
DRESS CODE
The Faculty enforces strict rules on the mode of dressing for all Law Students during classes, while in the Faculty premises and at other formal occassions.
Accordingly, all students will be addmitted to class and other formals and must appear within the Faculty Premises, dressed in the manner set out below.

Male Students:

  • Shirts, trousers and ties (black and white only) (jeans, collarless and sports shirts are not allowed).
  • French suit; and
  • Suits, especially during OOULSA functions and at other formal occassions

Female Students:

  • Simple gown or dress.
  • Skirts and blouse(black and white only); and
  • Suits, especially during OOULSA functions and at other formal occassions.
